Text adaptation is commonly associated with simplification. That is only one use. Teachers can also create more formal versions, compare B2 and C1 language, expand compressed explanations or prepare students for the style of an examination, report or professional document.

For advanced learners, the objective is not to make every sentence longer. The aim is to examine precision: how technical definitions are qualified, how claims are linked and how formal subject language carries meaning.

Select the level for the task

An approximate learner level does not automatically determine the level of every text. A B2 student may work productively with C1 material when the source is well organised, the topic is familiar and the purpose is clear. Equally, a C1 text may be a poor choice when its complexity comes from unnecessary wording rather than useful subject language.

The question is functional: what must students be able to read, explain or produce after the lesson? An examination-preparation task, for example, may require exposure to formal definitions and dense relationships that would be inappropriate in an introductory activity.

Classroom example: Codd's rules

Twelve students in class 5 AINF were preparing for their state examination. Their teacher selected a demanding computing-textbook passage on relational database systems and Codd's thirteen rules, numbered from 0 to 12.

Text Adapter produced B2 and C1 versions. A B1 version existed but the teacher chose not to use it because it did not serve the purpose. Students compared the numbered rules, identified unknown terms and answered technical questions about missing information and data operations.

The numbered structure supported close comparison. Students worked independently and with sustained concentration. The teacher reported that almost all received additional credit and would have continued if more time had been available. The task mattered because it was connected to the interdisciplinary interview in their examination.

Prepare texts for close comparison

AI can produce a controlled comparison. A teacher can request a B2 and C1 version while specifying that key technical terms, numbering and logical relationships must remain. It can also highlight differences in hedging, noun phrases, passive structures and the language of definition.

The output should be used selectively. A generated C1 version may become inflated or less clear. Advanced language is not decorative complexity. The teacher should keep changes that add precision or reflect the language students genuinely need, and remove changes that merely make the text harder.

Four productive uses

  • Compare how two levels define the same technical concept.
  • Ask students to restore missing qualifications to a shorter version.
  • Use a formal version as a model before examination or report writing.
  • Have students explain which wording is more precise and why.

In the relational-databases case, students compared Codd's rules line by line at B2 and C1. The numbered structure supported sustained, independent reading without lowering the level of the subject work.
